Welcome to Press Start, home of everything you need to know about games consoles and collecting, from an Australian point of view.
There are hundreds of sites out there with information on consoles, but we aim to not only cater to the Australian collector, but to provide practical information to collectors, enthusiasts, and foreign collectors interested in what happened on the PAL side of the pond.
We also cover a great deal of NTSC-only consoles, and detail how to track them down in Australia, region compatibility and the mechanics of actually getting them running on our power supplies and PAL TV standard.
NEWSReturn of the guestbook | Posted by Craig at 15:31 on 30 Jan 2005A quick message to let you know that I've got rid of the forum after it attracted Russian pornography spam and no real messages for ages. The guestbook is back (via the Comments link to the left), so please add something for me.. :)Comments: AddHmmm? | Posted by Craig at 05:38 on 26 Jan 2005Wow. Talk about hectic.
The last 6 months have been ridiculous to say the least, and unfortunately amongst that I've been neglecting Press Start. Work is proving pretty full on and there's going to be at least 6 weeks before it calms down. In the meantime, here's some pics of my current collection to tide you over.
- My entertainment unit, with current gen games and DVDs in the rack on the left. Then my Logitech Z680 surround setup. At the top I've got the Virtual Boy, Famicom and Famicom Disk System, Neo Geo CD and Vectrex. Bottom row (all hooked up) are the Gamecube, PS2, XBox and Dreamcast and Toploader NES. Also got the stepdown convertor there for all my non-240v needs. Right hand shelves hold a PC Engine DUO, Goldstar 3DO (with 240v cord) and a SNES 2 and PAL SNES.
- Boxes on the top, with the Jaguar, Nomad, Lynx, NGPC, Wonderswan and Gameboy variants still sitting in there. Next shelf down is NES, PAL SNES, US SNES, Famicom Disk System, Gameboy and GBA. Second one down is boxed variants of the above, with Virtual Boy, Neo Geo CD, Game.Com and other handheld games. Third shelf is boxed 3DO, Boxed Vectrex, DC (PAL and JP), PSX, JP Saturn, PC Engine, Turbografx, Jaguar and CD32 games. Fourth is boxed Megadrive and Master System, with a few loose carts and my buggered Lynx 1. Bottom shelf is a stack of 2600, some boxed Colecovision and Videopac, my two Game.coms and other misc stuff.
- Top shelf is empty boxes, with a boxed Sanyo TRY 3DO, boxed Colecovision driving controller and NES athletics mat. Second row is various Megadrives and Master Systems, including a silver MD1 which I painted myself. Second shelf has a Amiga CD32, Super Famicom, Panasonic 3DO, Gamegear and Turbografx. Third shelf has two Colecovisions, NES, N64, Gameboy and Intellivison. Fourth shelf has PAL and JP Saturns, PC Engine and PC Engine GT. Fifth shelf is two versions of the Atari 2600 plus a pong console variant. Bottom shelf holds the Philips Videopac, Emerson Arcadia and a cart pong. Comments: AddAll set up! | Posted by Craig at 15:31 on 31 Jul 2004Yep, that's right. I've fully moved into my new place, and I've got ADSL hooked up. This of course means I can start updating Press Start again.
I've got a few interesting things in the pipeline at the moment, including a PC Engine Duo (!!), Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar and a cheap Nokia N-Gage. Still got some reasonably large bills to pay because of the move, but that should never put a dent in games collecting.. :)Comments: Add | View (1)Hawooooga! | Posted by Craig at 16:50 on 24 Jun 2004No updates for ages? Yep, that's right. This time there's a reason other than laziness though.
I mentioned in an earlier post that the house I'm renting at the moment was on the market to be sold. Well, it's been sold and we have to move out. So, now I'm in the middle of a frantic hunt to find a place that'll accomodate me and a large videogames collection. Updates will probably resume again once I'm settled, have internet access at home again and can therefore afford the time to start scouring the countryside for videogames.Comments: AddThe things you find.. | Posted by Craig at 12:55 on 29 May 2004Today has been an interesting day. For example, today I learnt that it has been possible to completely hide two bookshelves and a large entertainment unit full of videogames from the people walking around our place (the owner of the place we're renting is selling and had an open house)
Secondly, I learnt that you never know what you'll find. Like two Japanese Super Famicom Satellaview carts, just sitting around in Cash Convertors. Whoop!
Comments: AddForuming | Posted by Craig at 14:33 on 20 May 2004Apoligies for the recent downtime. If you happened to have wandered through to Press Start over the last week, you would have noticed a rather orange looking site. This was the old site design. That was around because my webhost had a huge crash, and then restored a year-old backup instead of the most recent one.
Oh well, now we're back.
Before the downtime, I decided to have a play around with setting up a forum on my angrypixel.net space. This means that there's now a Press Start forum, which anyone can register for and post whatever they like.
I'm going to put a few of my front-page musings up as threads, so hopefully people can sign up and contribute!Comments: AddOMG! | Posted by Craig at 18:31 on 11 May 2004An Article!
A week or so ago, I got a digital camera. Then I pulled apart my Hartung GameMaster. Join me as I make a console that was barely working beforehand even less likely to work in the future.
Comes complete with pics that prove that sweatshop labour isn't just for Nike. Take a look.Comments: AddAcquisitions, and a question.. | Posted by Craig at 15:00 on 11 May 2004I've been rather busy recently, getting my hands on two consoles which I've been after for a while.
The first is this beauty, the Amiga CD32.
I know I haven't got the best games I can get for it at the moment. In fact, I've got one of the worst games I've ever played (a completely horrible Doom clone called GLOOM). I'll need to track down a few of the classics before I can truly pass judgement.
The second is the Famicom and Famicom Disk System.
Aaahhh.. I've been after one of these for ages, and I managed to snap one up off eBay.
So, how does it play? Does it even work? Is the belt in the disk drive buggered? Well, I don't know, because I need to track down a DC 10v 850mA negative tip AC adaptor to get the Famicom powered and working (already got the adaptor for the disk system) Then the best I'll probably get out of it is a black and white display, as both of my TVs struggle with NTSC through RF.
Apart from making plans to get this thing working and occasionally rubbing it on my body, I noticed something interesting on the back of the RAM connector (the black thing that plugs into the Fami cart slot and connects it to the disk drive)
It's an input connector, covered by a little sliding door. As for what it does, I have no bloody idea and my Googling has led me to naught. Can you plug an AV cable in there? (the size is different to the SNES/N64 cables)
Anyone who knows, can you please comment on this post or send me an email. I must know damnit!Comments: AddAbout bloody time. | Posted by Craig at 16:50 on 26 Apr 2004Approximately a month ago, my favourite South African (that would be Stuart Kinnear) forwarded me his fantastic Playstation 2 article, with a slightly modified format that suited an indepth explanation of the current behemoth of the console world.
Unfortunately, at the time I was going quite insane, having just turned 25 and engaging in too much work and too much drunken debauchery. So, I completely lost track of the article. Fortunately now I've come to my senses and posted it, so you can all admire what a sterling job Stu's done of it.
In other news, I've acquired a digital camera. The main reason I did this was so I could properly photograph my collection (once I get used to using the cam) and use the pictures on here. You can also use the fact that I finally bought Morrowind on XBox as the reason I haven't been seen around here.Comments: AddArgh! | Posted by Craig at 09:24 on 21 Mar 2004No updates for this week, even though I've got yet another fantastic article from Stuart Kinnear to upload (this time about the Playstation 2) I've had to go into work both Saturday and today and so I'm buggered. Will do the upload later when I get a bit of spare time.Comments: Add
