Press Start

Welcome to Press Start, home of everything you need to know about games consoles and collecting, from an Australian point of view.

There are hundreds of sites out there with information on consoles, but we aim to not only cater to the Australian collector, but to provide practical information to collectors, enthusiasts, and foreign collectors interested in what happened on the PAL side of the pond.

We also cover a great deal of NTSC-only consoles, and detail how to track them down in Australia, region compatibility and the mechanics of actually getting them running on our power supplies and PAL TV standard.

Dredging up the past | Posted by Craig at 11:52 on 07 Mar 2004
Ages ago, when I first started on the thing that would become Press Start, I did so by delving into my creative side and doing some small pixel art for each console in my collection. Then my collection grew, and I found that I couldn't draw them fast enough to keep up with the purchasing speed.

Well, they're still around, and I thought I'd just post one for the hell of it. It's also the console I've been playing the most recently, having acquired Ikaruga.

Presenting...

One day I'll draw a heap more to cover the rest of the consoles on this site (I've only got 12 done, so don't hold your breath) but you can enjoy that one for the moment.

Playing the Station | Posted by Craig at 15:53 on 29 Feb 2004
I've just added an excellent article on the Playstation (otherwise known as the PSX, PSone or the behemoth that devoured all) to the site, courtesy of Stuart Kinnear.

Stuart found the site, wanted to ask me about the SNES and games he picked up in South Africa, and totally out of the blue sent me the excellent PSX article which you see basically as it was when he sent it (barring some minor Australianising from yours truly).

That kind of thing is what makes it great to run a site like this, getting a bit of discussion going and finding out that people are finding my random crap about consoles somewhat interesting. If you ARE reading this site and like it, shoot me an email to make sure I keep my mind on the job at hand and away from beer.

Market Trawl | Posted by Craig at 05:41 on 15 Feb 2004
Had a pretty decent market trawl today (even though it's hot as all hell STILL).

Managed to pick up:

Kid Icarus (NES, cart and sleeve only)
Rainbow Islands (NES, cart and sleeve only)
Shining Force II (Megadrive, Boxed, no instructions, ex rental)
Virtual Fighter 2(Megadrive, Genesis version in an asian pirate case)

I'm extremely happy with today. Made the sweat worth it.. :)

More stuff! | Posted by Craig at 14:49 on 03 Feb 2004
To get myself back into the swing of things, I've added more consoles to the articles section, with small snippets of information, commentary or ranting. They're merely placefillers until either I educate myself up on the consoles enough to comment, or I find a expert/collector who is keen to share their love for the particular piece of plastic and silicon. Until then, enjoy the pretty pictures and commentary.

Wonderswan, and minor GBA update | Posted by admin at 13:35 on 03 Feb 2004
I acquired an original boxed Wonderswan with two games today, and noticed something which I've never seen mentioned in any media outlet. When the GBA SP was released, Nintendo was roundly condemned for combining the headphone and link ports, meaning that you had to buy an adaptor to use headphones and couldn't use headphones and a link cable simultaneously.

However, it seems this same design feature was first introduced in the Wonderswan, which supports a similar multipurpose port. For the life of me, I can't recall this being mentioned in any of the print media when the SP first came to light. The Wonderswan is a significantly obscure console for westerners, but with the breadth of gaming coverage nowadays, surely some journo would have made the comparison. Especially unknown to me is if the Wonderswan faced a similar backlash about the inherit drawbacks of having a combined port.

If you're an expert in such things, let me know. In fact, if you're a Wonderswan expert then I definitely want to hear from you.

Weekend buys | Posted by Craig at 05:59 on 25 Jan 2004
It's a long weekend here, and it's also the first weekend I've had time to trawl markets, pawnbrokers and Cash Converters shops in my area. I've had a few decent finds too:

- SNES Super Scope, with instructions and Super Scope 6 cart. Boxed, but missing the internal foam. I don't know what the hell Nintendo were thinking with this light gun, but although it looks bloody cool it's not the most comfortable thing to use for long periods of time.

- NES Family Fun Fitness mat and Athletic World cart. After a bit of a trawl on the net as to how to get it working, I've found it works fine and was cheap as well. Yet another bizzarre peripheral you don't see all that much of. Much like the Eyetoy, you feel like a bit of a dork using it though. :)

- Megadrive games, Herzog Zwei and The Immortal. Two top quality MD games I've never tracked down before (for cheap enough). I had the opportunity to get a boxed MD and a tonne of games, but the price was above what I wanted to pay considering I bought a 17" LCD monitor yesterday.

Whooo | Posted by Craig at 16:26 on 21 Jan 2004
The last few months have been interesting to say the least. First of all I got retrenched (along with half of my company), then I took off on a holiday back home for a month and had relatively little internet access. Now I'm finally back in Melbourne and have slightly settled into my new job. Thus, it means it's time to add more to Press Start.

Of course, new job means I won't be able to hammer out Press Start articles during slow sections of the day like before, so I need to get back in touch with the people who emailed me expressing interest in contributing to this site. If you're keen, send me an email.

Links section | Posted by Craig at 16:14 on 01 Dec 2003
I've gone ahead and added the staple section of any website, the Links section. First link there is one to Console Database, courtesy of Dale being a top bloke regarding Gamate pictures.

If you want to link to Press Start, there's a button on the page for you to use. Also, if you've got a site of retro/collector goodness and you want to swap links, send me an email.

Dodgy handhelds ahoy | Posted by Craig at 05:43 on 18 Nov 2003
Continuing in my current theme of doing writeups of pseudo-obscure handhelds, I've done one on the Tiger Game.com. Of course, these handhelds were obscure because they were crap and poorly supported, but that just makes them more of a collectors magnet, doesn't it? :)

Gamate! | Posted by admin at 16:21 on 10 Nov 2003
Never heard of the Gamate? Now you have. Information is available on the net, but nobody seems to have confirmed that this machine was released in Australia, and actually saw a wide distribution. I've done an article on this little handheld, and as per usual if anyone has any further information (or wishes to contribute an article) then please mail me.
